Invitation to Apply to ‘Shift’ Editorial Committee – Extended Deadline Feb. 21

Dear Graduate Students,

Do you want to learn more about the intricacies of academic publishing?

As a member of the Editorial Committee for Shift: Graduate Journal of Visual and Material Culture you will get the chance to do just that. Given the interdisciplinary approach of the journal, you will also have the opportunity to connect with other graduate students in disciplines across the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Members of the Editorial Committee are responsible for reading submissions to the journal, ranking them, and discussing their merits, in order to decide which papers are of suitable quality to be published. The committee then recommends those papers deemed to be of highest quality for approval by the Editorial Board.

The time commitment to participate on the committee is reasonable, and members are given several weeks in which to read the papers. This is followed by a meeting in late spring, where the papers are discussed and ranked. Past members of the committee have found that taking part in this selection process has helped them get a better understanding of what makes an article fit for publication.

Shift: Graduate Journal of Visual and Material Culture is an initiative created in 2008 by graduate students at Queen’s University. This annual online journal is dedicated to providing an inclusive and broadly based forum for graduate students researching visual and material culture to present current and original scholarly research. As of October 2010, when work on Issue 4 began, Shift became a mobile publication, with its editorial and administrative components moving between host institutions every three years. In 2013-14, NYU will be hosting the journal for Issue 7.

To apply, please send a CV and a brief letter of intent to by 21 February 2014.

Shift is also seeking a Reviews Editor for Issue 7. The Reviews Editor is responsible for reading and commenting on book reviews and art reviews that may be submitted to the journal. This is an independent position with a highly flexible schedule. Candidates will have some experience in publishing and will be self-directed.

To apply, please send a CV and a brief letter of intent to by 21 February 2014.
