This course will examine historical research scandals, subsequent bioethical principles and
regulations, and current controversies in research ethics. Topics will include regulatory oversight
and study design, informed consent, selection of subjects, conflicts of interest, social effects of
research, research on marginalized and vulnerable populations, the use of non-human animals,
and the allocation of resources for research.
