At a Black Lives Matter conference recently hosted by the Gender and Women’s Studies Department at the University of Arizona, some of the conversations turned to ideas of love. In the spirit of continuing and developing this conversation, the New York Metro American Studies Association (NYMASA) has chosen the theme of Love for our 2015 annual conference. We invite papers, presentations, performances, and exhibitions that explore the cross-disciplinary, transnational, and trans-historical possibilities embedded in the concept of love.

Although we especially welcome papers that intersect with American Studies broadly defined, NYMASA will consider paper proposals on any relevant historical period, including the present. We would love to consider presentations in alternative formats than the 20-minute paper, as well as proposals that circulate across historical and disciplinary borders.Â

We welcome university-affiliated and independent scholars, academics, professionals, and students, as well as presentations that incorporate performance, visual art, and music. Artists and musicians working across mediums and media should feel free to submit proposals to perform, curate, or exhibit their work. Please note that abstracts will be accepted for individual paper presentations only, not pre-constituted panels.
