Ester Reiter will discuss her new book A Future Without Hate or Need: The Promise of the Jewish Left in Canada (Between the Lines Books, 2016) on Wednesday, November 2 (6:00 PM) at the Tamiment Library. A reception with wine and cheese will follow the lecture. This event is sponsored by the Frederic Ewen Center.
Ester Reiter is a professor emeritus at York University, where she taught in the School of Women’s Studies. She grew up in the secular Jewish left in New York, and is a member of the United Jewish People’s Order in Toronto. Her knowledge of Yiddish made this research possible. A Future Without Hate or Need brings to life the rich and multi-layered lives of a dissident political community. Activists in this secular Jewish community attempted to weave together their identities as Jews with their internationalist class politics and labour activism.
Copies of A Future Without Hate or Need will be available for purchase.
