“A Phantasmic Genealogy of Music” with Gary Tomlinson

Please join us on Monday, February 27th at 6pm to hear a public lecture by Professor Gary Tomlinson on “A Phantasmic Genealogy of Music, 1500-2000.” Professor Tomlinson will be speaking in the first floor Great Room of 19 University Place. The abstract and poster for the talk are below. If you could please circulate this, we would be very appreciative!
“What is the nature of music’s impact on us?  In this lecture Gary Tomlinson traces a genealogy of answers to this question that encounters five centuries of Western musicians, historians, psychologists, and philosophers.  The lineage converges on doctrines and practices of early-modern magic and—what is more surprising—reveals that, though these have been naturalized and controlled in recent ideas, they have not been dislodged.”GenealogyofMusic.png
